I got to play with the incredible force that is Charlotte Taylor last night at South on Main for the Oxford American's Local Live concert series. It was a lively packed house. It's always fun to play with Gypsy Rain, but when there's a good crowd feeling your energy, the combination is tough to beat. I noticed during one of Matt Stones "epic solos" how suddenly aware I was of my involuntary rocking back and forth and bouncing. I then became acutely aware of my facial expressions. There was lots of smiling and "stink face". Both of which are good things in my book. As I'm bobbing and weaving around on stage making ridiculous faces next to a soloist I started to make eye contact with audience members. Damnit! I had forgotten about the cameras! Well, it's too late now. They've captured me looking like an idiot. That's when I started to notice how responsive the audience members were to my reactions of the music. They may not have been speaking the same language as the members of the band on stage, but they did read body language subconsciously. Matt and I were having a conversation with music and they were enjoying it. When my stink face changed to a smile, they smiled. When I started bobbing my head, they did the same. This was cool. They were in the moment with us. Completely. I love this.
