Moody Brews

I always feel something shift the moment I pull up on a Friday night. It's not nerves. It's more like a relief. The courtyard behind Moody Brews has this way of already being alive before we even unload our gear. Families tucked into tables, kids doing their thing, friends finally exhaling after a long week. Nobody's waiting on us. They're just...there. And somehow that makes everything easier.

By the time we're set up, I'm already smiling.

I've played so many different venues, and I can tell you this one hits different. It's a whole vibe. We're walking into a moment that's already happening, and we get to be part of it.

Some nights I notice people leaning in, really listening, following where we take a tune. On other nights, the music just kind of wraps around the laughter, conversations, and the general hum of people who are happy to be together. There's something that feels right about music that doesn't have to demand your attention, but rewards you if you give it.

Playing outdoors teaches you things. The sound moves differently. The crowd moves differently. You feel the air change as the night goes on. We start somewhere that feels true to the moment and just let it breathe. We'll catch each other's eyes and adjust: slow it down, open it up, leave more space. The goal was never to control the night. It's to be inside the moment.

As a duo, there's nowhere to hide, and I mean that in the best way. Every note has weight. Every idea either lands or it doesn't. It stops feeling like a performance pretty quickly and starts feeling more like a conversation between the two of us, and with everyone out there. That’s the foundation, but it never feels closed. There’s always space for someone to step in and be part of it. Sometimes it’s a student. Sometimes it’s a friend. Sometimes it’s someone who’s been meaning to sit in for weeks and finally decides, “Alright, tonight’s the night.” And all it takes is one more person.

The sound changes. The conversation changes. The energy lifts just a little. Not because it’s bigger, but because it’s shared in a new way.

For students, especially, there’s nothing like it. You can practice scales, learn tunes, work through exercises, but stepping into a live tune, with people, in the moment? That’s different. That’s where everything becomes real.

They have to listen. React. Adjust. Take a chance.

And the best part is, they’re not doing it alone. They’re stepping into something that’s already moving, already supportive, already listening back.

That kind of environment changes people. What’s interesting to me is how little it takes to shift the whole feel of the night.

You don’t need a full jam session with ten players rotating through. Sometimes it’s just one extra horn, or a rhythm player sitting in for a tune or two, but even that small addition makes the whole thing feel more communal. More open. More alive. This music has always been about community. Not just performing for people, but creating something with people. When someone sits in, they’re not interrupting the flow. They’re becoming part of it. Adding their voice to the conversation, and everyone out in the courtyard feels that, whether they realize it or not.

The moments I hold onto are small ones, like someone tapping their foot without realizing it. A conversation that pauses just long enough. A kid drifting a little closer to where we're playing, curious about what it is making them dance.

That's the whole thing, right there.

The world is loud. Everywhere you look, something is trying to be bigger, faster, more. Friday nights at Moody Brews aren't that, and I'm grateful for it every single week. It's real people, outside, sharing time together. And we get to be the soundtrack. I don't take that lightly.

This is what I've always wanted playing music to feel like.

If you've already been out, you know. It's easy and a little different every week.

If you haven't, come by. Bring your people, grab a spot in the courtyard, and stay as long as you want. We'll be out there doing our thing, somewhere between the background and the center of it all.

Every Friday night, when the weather's right. Hope to see you there.
